ICS Publication Formats

ICS Analysis

An ICS Analysis provides a succinct analytical account of contemporary affairs related to China and East Asia. It should be comprehensible to both the informed as well as the general reader. Drafts submitted under ICS Analysis shall be reviewed by two anonymous external referees. Once accepted, the author will be required to factor in such comments/suggestions/corrections provided by the reviewers. A plagiarism check is done on the paper before it is cleared.

All papers are published with an image based on the theme of the article. Therefore, the author has the option of providing a suitable image with the source or else the Editorial Committee will undertake the task. Cover Images with maps shall not be accepted.

The authors will be notified about the status of publication of their submissions under ICS Analysis after the external referees have reviewed it after a month from the date of submission.

The approximate length would be up to 4000 words.

Published samples of ICS Analysis can be accessed here.

ICS Working Paper

An ICS Working Paper is similar to the ICS Occasional Paper, in that it resembles an extended journal article. Given that working papers are drawn from ongoing research, they shall not be refereed but merely reviewed by the Editorial Team. However, a plagiarism check will be carried out. As in the case with other ICS Publications, the ICS Working Paper must include an image based on the theme of the paper with the source. Cover images with maps shall not be accepted.

The authors will be notified about the status of their submissions under ICS Working Paper a month from the date of submission.

The approximate length would be up to 8000 words.

Published samples of the ICS Working Papers can be accessed here.

ICS Occasional Paper

An ICS Occasional Paper (OP) is similar to an extended journal article. It is expected to be of high academic quality and may be based on secondary or primary research. Papers submitted under this format may include themes that go beyond contemporary matters, with regard to China and East Asia. The submitted drafts will be reviewed by two anonymous external referees. A plagiarism check will be carried out before the submission is accepted. All papers are published with an image based on the theme of the article. Therefore, the author has the option of providing a suitable image with the source or else the Editorial Committee will undertake the task. Cover images with maps shall not be accepted.

The authors will be notified about the status of their submissions in this category after the external referees have reviewed it after a month from the date of submission.

The approximate length would be up to 7000 words.

Published samples of the ICS Occasional Paper can be viewed here.

ICS Translations

The ICS Translations series was introduced keeping in mind the relevance of generating an understanding of opinions and views emanating from China. The aim, therefore, is to present in translation, the views of a diverse range of scholars, commentators, and analysts from the PRC, from across different disciplines. It seeks to provide original views and opinions to the community of China watchers in India.

All decisions regarding the length and choice of articles for translation will be taken by Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Editor ICS Translations. The authors will be notified about the status of their articles within 8-10 weeks from the date of submission.

Previously published translations can be viewed here.

ICS Monograph

The ICS Monograph is a single-volume work based on in-depth research within a specialized area of knowledge. These works contribute to the ongoing scholarship on China as well as East Asia, and offer an original insight into the field. The authors will be notified about the status of their submissions after 3 months from the date of submission.

The approximate length would be 70,000- 80,000 words.

ICS Research Blogs

An ICS Research Blog is a short commentary on issues of current relevance in China, as well as East Asia. The blog piece should include references and sources, which are required to be listed as hyperlinks within the body of the article. The draft is reviewed by the ICS Faculty. Once accepted, the author will be required to factor in the comments so provided by the reviewers. The submission will also be put through a plagiarism check, before it is cleared. All blogs include at least one image, which should be accompanied with a source.

The authors will be notified about the publication status of their submissions under ICS Research Blog within 7 days from the date of submission.

The approximate length would be up to 2000 words. In case the author wishes to submit a Book Review under the category of the ICS Research Blog, the indicative length would be up to 1200 words.

Review Process

The author will be notified that their submission has been received within 24 hours of submission. The author will further be intimated, within 7 days, if their submission has been sent to external referees for comments, or not. The ICS Publications Team will get in touch with the author once the external referees have reviewed the submission. The author shall then be required to incorporate the comments of the referees. Once the author sends the final draft, with all comments incorporated, the submission shall be processed for publication, which may take 5 to 7 weeks.
