Wednesday Seminar | The Venezuelan Crisis and its Implications for China’s Worldview | 28 January 2026 @ 3PM IST | Zoom Webinar

28 Jan 2026
Gunjan Singh
Venue: Zoom Webinar
Time: 3:00 PM

In his New Year speech, Xi Jinping remarked that, “the world today is undergoing both changes and turbulence, and some regions are still engulfed in war. China always stands on the right side of history, and is ready to work with all countries to advance world peace and development and build a community with a shared future for humanity”. The capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the United States army adds a new challenge to Xi Jinping’s idea of ‘world peace’. As expected, China strongly criticised this action. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterised this as a violation of international law and a blatant attack on Venezuelan sovereignty. President Xi Jinping reiterated that, “China firmly opposes the interference of foreign forces in Venezuela’s internal affairs”. China has consistently approached the developing world with a view centred around sovereignty and critiqued the US for interference and it is no different in this case as well. Venezuela highlights a pattern of China’s behaviour with regard to its search for influence and status. This Wednesday Seminar presentation will analyse the PRC’s response to the Venezuelan Crisis and its perspective on the United States’ current behaviour. It will also attempt to critically examine China’s assessment of its position globally as well as the future trajectory of the international order.
