Institute of Chinese Studies in association with the Department of International Relations and Governance Studies, Shiv Nadar University (SNU), invites applications to participate in a workshop on research methods in Chinese Studies from young researchers and academics interested in China and its neighbourhood, including on India-China relations and India-China comparisons.

The objective of the three-day workshop is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding about research methodology, field research, data use and writing skills, in the context of writing about China and East Asia. To elaborate, it will discuss ways of collecting data in the field, from the archives, and various other sources. The workshop will espouse three key approaches to the study of China – China as area studies, China as part of comparative studies and China as a basis of theory/theorizing and philosophy.

The workshop will follow an interactive method. Participants will receive intensive, hands-on training in research methods and will be mentored individually by ICS and SNU faculty.

The two pre-requisites for applying for this workshop are:

  1. that the applicant should be engaged in researching and writing on a topic related to China, East Asia or an aspect of India’s Asia policy that impinges on China
  2. that the applicant is present on campus for the entire 3 days duration of the workshop.

Master's, M.Phil and early PhD students working on China and East Asia

Submissions

Interested applicants are required to submit a writing sample and a synopsis (800 to 1000 words) of a proposed article on China and East Asia that they would like to prepare for publication.

The synopses will be screened by the organizers and selected applicants will be required to submit a full draft of their articles (3000-5000 words) prior to the commencement of the workshop.

Note:

Participants will also be required to read the preparatory material, which will be sent to them.

Successful applicants shall be required to pay a nominal feel of Rs. 500/- (Rupees Five Hundred Only) at the time of registration.

A certificate shall be provided to those who fully complete the requirements of the workshop.

Important dates

15 May 2019: deadline for receipt of synopsis of article along with covering letter giving full name, email and postal address, educational qualification and institutional affiliation of the applicant. This should be sent to icsdelhi.in@gmail.com, with a copy to jabin.jacob@snu.edu.in

1 June 2019: notification to be sent by the organizers to those whose applications have been accepted.

1 July 2019: deadline for receipt of complete draft of article by the participant.

Outstation participants should prepare to arrive at SNU by 5pm on 19 July 2019 and to leave after the conclusion of the workshop in the evening of 22 July 2019.

The selected participants will be reimbursed for 3-tier AC train fare to and from Delhi, and will be provided with 3 nights boarding and lodging at Shiv Nadar University, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Greater Noida, UP. The SNU will offer pick-up from and drop to the Botanical Garden Metro Station (Blue Line) for the participants at specified timings.
