This seminar would document China’s meteoric rise over a relatively short time period in the global innovation rankings of countries. It will explore the mechanisms the Chinese government leveraged to i) promote innovation and technology development inside the country, and ii) facilitate the inward flow of knowledge and technology from overseas. Finally, the speaker will share his views on what the future might hold for China’s scientific progress, technology development and innovation capabilities.
About the Speaker
Prof. S. Ramakrishna (Rama) Velamuri is a Professor and Dean of the School of Management, Mahindra University. He was previously on the faculty of China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), where he held the Chengwei Capital Chair in Entrepreneurship, and on that of IESE Business School. He has been a Visiting Professor at ISB, the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Bocconi University, and the International Anti-Corruption Academy Austria. His areas of expertise are: i) entrepreneurship and innovation; ii) innovation and technology in China; and iii) management education. He has been a facilitator in executive education programs for Michelin, Air Liquide, Roche, Evonik, Tencent, China Development Bank, SASAC, Shandong Gold, Kangshifu, Bosch, UNICEF, Henkel Adhesives Technologies, Abbott Laboratories, Goodyear-Dunlop, and Vodafone, etc. He has also been a facilitator in the China Entrepreneurial Leadership Camp and the CEO Collaborative Forum. His research has been published in leading academic and practitioner journals (Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and California Management Review) and has received more than 4,500 Google Scholar citations. He is one of the most cited scholars in the world on business model innovation. He has published approximately 50 teaching case studies, most of which are available through Harvard Business School Publishing, Ivey Publishing, CEIBS Publishing and IESE Publishing. Three of his case studies have won awards and several have been on best-seller lists. He has written for, given interviews to, and been quoted in a number of international and national media outlets. He served on the 2019 and 2020 Advisory Councils of the CNBC Disruptor 50, to select the 50 most disruptive private companies in the world.
About the Chair
Prof. Varaprasad S. Dolla is a Professor in Chinese Studies and former Chairperson of the Centre for East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Currently, he teaches courses on Chinese history, and development and inequality in China and India. Earlier, he taught courses on science and technology in China’s development, Chinese foreign policy, Chinese political system, and contemporary issues in Asia. He has guided 34 M.Phil and 18 Ph.D students in their research for over twenty-five years. He was an ASIA (Asian Studies in Asia) Fellow at Peking University, Beijing, in 2004. He was Visiting Scholar at Tsinghua University in 2014. He was an Academic Mentor to post-doctoral scholars at India China Institute, New School, New York during 2017-19. In 2015, he published a book titled, Science and Technology in Contemporary China: Interrogating Policies and Progress (Cambridge University Press). Besides publishing research articles in journals and chapters in edited books, he has also presented research papers in several international and national conferences. His media appearances include CCTV, Xinhua News, Lok Sabha TV, WION and China Radio International. He has also contributed to Economic Times, People’s Daily, The Hindu and other media.
