As Japan heads for Lower House election, effective leadership is crucial for delivering good governance and manoeuvring through colossal demographic, economic, security, and strategic challenges amid fluid geopolitics.The party cannot afford weak leadership as it will threaten to inject political instability which in turn will have an adverse impact on Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific outlook. These aspects will be explored and assessed in this seminar.
About the Speaker
Titli Basu is an Associate Professor in the School of International Studies, at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Previously, she was a Fellow at the Manohar Parikkar Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi (MPIDSA). She was also a Visiting Fellow at the National Institute for Defence Studies (Ministry of Defence), Japan in 2017. Dr. Basu’s research work has been published in various international peer-reviewed journals, and her commentaries feature regularly in global forums. Her research interests include geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific, with special focus on East Asia.
About the Chair
Deepa Wadhwa is the Chairperson of the India-Japan Friendship Forum, New Delhi. She also serves on the Governing Council of the Asian Confluence, based in Shillong. She was a distinguished career diplomat who joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1979 and retired in December 2015. She has served as Ambassador of India to Japan (2012-2015), Qatar (2009-2012), and Sweden (2005-2009). During her career, she has also held other significant assignments in China, Geneva, The Netherlands, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the Ministry of External Affairs.
