The book Eclipsing the West: China, India and the Forging of a New World (Manchester University Press, 2025) charts the development trajectories of China and India since 1947/8. China is now vying with the United States to be the largest economy in the world and a technology leader, while India could emerge as the second largest economy and global technology leader by the middle of the century. How will these two rising powers navigate their way on the world stage and shape the emerging order? What will be the implications for commerce, international law and global public goods such as climate? This Wednesday Seminar explores such a series of scenarios offered in the book which chart different futures, offering analyses of how China and India may transform the global system.
