Wednesday Seminar | China’s Rise as a Norm Builder and Challenges to the Idea of Democracy | 3 September 2025 @ 3:00 PM IST | Zoom Webinar

03 Sep 2025
Avinash Anil Godbole
Venue: Zoom Webinar
Time: 3:00 PM

China is cementing its pole position as a champion of various challenges facing the world, in the fields of development, governance, security and people-to-people relations. Even as it is pushing its own norms out, China is also engaged in a process wherein it is discrediting the liberal norms as petty, divisive and destructive. In an era when the global leadership has turned protectionist and indifferent to the questions of global order it creates a significant and largely uncontested space for China to socialise and popularise its norms especially in the developing world. China is also challenging the idea of democracy simply by arguing that development itself is democracy and promotes the idea that liberal democracy is not a prerequisite to growth. This presentation will focus on conundrums like this and what they mean for the world order and for India.
