About the Discussion

The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) and the India International Centre (IIC) jointly hosted a round table discussion featuring Dr. Alicia García-Herrero. Dr. García-Herrero began the session with a framing presentation. This was followed by a moderated round table discussion, which examined the key aspects of China's economic landscape. The discussion explored the current state of the Chinese economy, the focus areas of its economic policies, the drivers of its technological growth, and the broader global implications of China’s economic decisions, with particular emphasis on their relevance to India.

 

About the Speaker

Alicia García-Herrero is a Senior Fellow at Bruegel; Chief Economist for Asia Pacific at French investment bank Natixis, Hong Kong; an independent Board Member of AGEAS insurance group; Non-resident Senior Fellow at the East Asian Institute (EAI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS); and an Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She is also a member of the Council of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation (FUF); the Board of the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation (CAPRI); the Council of Advisors on Economic Affairs to the Spanish Government; the Advisory Board of the Berlin-based Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) and an advisor to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s research arm (HKIMR). She holds a PhD in Economics from George Washington University and has published extensively in refereed journals and books. Alicia is very active in international as well as social media. As a recognition of her thought leadership, she was included in the TOP Voices in Economy and Finance by LinkedIn in 2017 and #6 in the Top Social Media Leaders by Refinitiv in 2020.

 

About the Chair

Suman Bery is the Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, with the rank of Cabinet Minister, a role he assumed on May 1, 2022. A seasoned policy economist and research administrator, he previously served as a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a non-resident fellow at Bruegel, Brussels. He was also a Board member of the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, New Delhi. From 2012 to 2016, Shri Bery was the Global Chief Economist at Royal Dutch Shell in The Hague, advising on global economic and political developments. He spearheaded a collaborative project using scenario modelling for India’s energy sector. Prior to this, he was Director-General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), where he enhanced its global outreach and contributed to India’s socioeconomic research landscape. He also served on the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, India’s Statistical Commission, and the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Technical Advisory Committee. Shri Bery began his career at the World Bank through its Young Professional Programme, focusing on financial sector development and country strategies, particularly in Latin America. His expertise led to his role as Special Consultant to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1992 to 1994. An accomplished writer on reform, financial systems, and energy policy, Shri Bery holds a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University and an undergraduate degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from Magdalen College, Oxford.
