Managing Stability in Riotous Xinjiang

17 Jul 2013
Dr. Debasish Chaudhuri, Ph.D in Chinese Studies, University of Delhi
Venue: ICS Seminar Room
Time: 12:00 AM

Abstract

The series of violent incidents in Xinjiang during the first quarter of 2013 is a clear indication that the authorities are still grappling with inter-ethnic tensions after four years of the 7/5 incident in Urumqi in 2009. The presentation will mainly cover ethnic clashes that occurred in last April and June, and the actions and rhetoric of the local and central authorities in anti-terror war in the region. Following the major riots in Lhasa and Urumqi in 2008 and 2009, many Chinese scholars called for the need to review ethnic policies and expressed their criticism of the present ethnic policies. On the basis of some recent developments, the speaker will throw light on whether there are any changes in Chinese ethnic policy.

(The presentation has been converted to an ICS Analysis)
