Drawing parallels with India, the talk will look at information gathering and reporting in China, and the difficulties of understanding a foreign language in interpreting local culture. The talk will also zoom out to provide an understanding of the media environment in China and the eco-system in which a journalist operates.


About the Speaker

Sowmiya Ashok is a journalist with The Indian Express. She was the Beijing correspondent for the paper in 2019 and has reported on a wide range of societal and cultural issues in China. She is a graduate of the political reporting programme for working journalists at Columbia Journalism School. She was a political reporter for The Hindu. Her work has appeared across several Indian and foreign publications. She tweets @sowmiyashok
