On 6 January 2025, the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), New Delhi hosted Prof. Kawashima Shin, Professor, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo, Japan, and Mr. Shimomura Munetaka, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan in India. The event was chaired by Prof. Alka Acharya, and attended by senior Fellows of the ICS and faculty from Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Delhi, and Jindal Global University. Prof. Kawashima, who specialises in the international history of East Asia and Japan-China relations, examined in depth the foreign policy objectives and global perception of China, identifying key issues and trends. Linking present-day developments with historical precedents, Prof. Kawashima explored various sub-themes including China’s domestic politics, which significantly impacts its foreign policy-making processes, and also examined the implications of China’s actions for Taiwan. The discussion that ensued featured various thought-provoking questions from the audience, and resulted in a fruitful exchange of ideas. Prof. Kawashima was also presented with the most recent edition of China Report, the Institute’s quarterly journal which is currently in its 60th year of publication.
