Abstract
The new CPC leadership under Xi Jinping formally launched its "mass line" campaign in June 2013. This campaign, somewhat reminiscent of the Mao era political campaigns is a noteworthy development in the present context in China. Undoubtedly, one of the main objectives of the leadership is to enhance its legitimacy through this campaign. While the party is dealing with the fallout of the crimes and subsequent trial and conviction of the disgraced leader Bo Xilai, the leadership also intends to blunt the popularity of increasing number of Mao-sympathisers within the Party. The presentation will throw light on the thrust of Xi Jinping’s campaign and its bearing upon the on-going Third Plenum of the 18th CPC Central Committee.
