China and the Making of an Alternative Order: Figuring Out the Indian Debate

01 Apr 2015
Dr. Jagannath Panda, Research Fellow, Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA)
Venue: ICS Seminar Room
Time: 3:00 PM

Abstract

The phenomenon of “India Rising” has hitherto been overshadowed by “China rising”. A point of view has taken root that China, as an emerging economic powerhouse, is taking the lead to restructure and redesign the regional/global economic and political order. Perceived indicators of this trend are China’s propulsion towards the establishment of an Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), taking the lead & instituting in Shanghai, the New Development Bank (NDB) under BRICS (a concept which, incidentally, India put forth first), the revival of the idea of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) and taking leadership role in the ASEAN-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Amidst these, China have floated the idea of ‘Maritime Silk Route’ (MSR) concurrently with the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ (SREB) under the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. The question is where does India stand in this picture?
