The book brings scholars from China, South Asia, and beyond the region to dwell on regional politics, connectivity and development projects, great power politics, ideology and cultural aspects of China and South Asia engagement. They present critical, comprehensive and expert analyses of China’s engagement with South Asia by covering historical, political, cultural, economic and strategic factors while including perspectives from individual countries. This book looks at the changing dynamics and regional power play between China and India. It explores crucial issues such as China–Pakistan Economic Corridor and the changing nature of China–India relations; China’s trident approach in South Asia and its rising influence in the region; the responses of small states to rising China; China’s twenty-first-century Belt and Road Initiative; China’s rise and the USA’s security policy vis-à-vis India; the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and regional security; and Russia’s ‘Pivot to the East’ and its impact on the Asia-Pacific region.

Speakers:

Saeed Shafqat is a social scientist of international repute. He joined Forman Christian College, Lahore in 2007 as a Professor and Founding Director of the Centre for Public Policy and Governance (CPPG).

Mahendra P Lama is a noted development economist and Senior Professor, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India.

Rashed Uz Zaman is a Professor in the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Zaman was a Fulbright Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at Vanderbilt University, USA, in 2012.

Rajiv Ranjan is an Associate Professor at the College of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University, Shanghai, China and also an Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi.

Sanjeev Kumar  is a Senior Research Fellow at Indian Council of World Affairs, Sapru House, New Delhi.

Jabin T. Jacob  is an Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations and Governance Studies at Shiv Nadar University, UP.

Chair:

Alka Acharya is a professor at the Centre for East Asian Studies (Chinese Studies), School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). She was the Director and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies.
