Divya Pokhriyal has submitted her PhD at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. She was teaching Chinese History and India-China Relations in the same department and has completed her MA in East Asian Studies. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from Miranda House, Delhi University. Her research interests include but are not limited to succession politics and women rulers in Chinese history, East Asian politics in the 19th century, and the impact of colonialism on socio-economic developments in China. She has published journal articles and book chapters on these subjects.
The normative ideal in Chinese imperial tradition marginalized women to the domestic sphere in the palace. This did not stop powerful women from becoming de-facto rulers who handled the affairs of the state.
