Anita Sharma is the Pro Vice Chancellor at K. R. Mangalam University, Gurugram, Delhi-NCR, India. She is an Adjunct Fellow at Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi. She was a Professor at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. She is former Head, Department of East Asian Studies and former Dean, Faculty of Social sciences, University of Delhi. She studied History in Delhi University at under graduate level and continued to receive her Post graduation specializing in Ancient Indian History and Chinese History. After completing her M.Phil. in History from University of Delhi, she studied Chinese History at Fudan University, Shanghai, China and Chinese Language at Beijing Language Institute, Beijing, China. She was the recipient of Ministry of Human Resource Development scholarship to China for two years. She received her doctorate in Buddhism from the University of Delhi where she taught History, Buddhism and Chinese Language for more than thirty years. She has written and edited books on Buddhism and Chinese Language and has a number of research papers and articles to her credit. Her research papers have been published in National and International journals. She has presented well documented research papers in International conferences and seminars. Her wide range of interests in research include social history, religion and pilgrimage, study of ancient settlements, Buddhism and Ecology, and socially Engaged Buddhism. She has travelled far and wide in and outside India for her research projects. She has guided a number of research scholars who worked on topics related to her area of interest. She has worked on a Major Project of University Grant Commission on Buddhist Settlements: A study of the Travels of Xuanzang in India. She was also involved with e-pg-pathshala program in Chinese Language of University Grant Commission.
She was a member of Core Committee set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for preparing strategy to expand the base of Chinese Language speakers in India. She was one of the members to prepare curriculum for Chinese Language for the students of Central Board of Secondary Education. She has been a Member in different capacities of various committees of University Grant Commission, Union Public Service Commission, School of Foreign Languages and Ministry of Human Resource Development. She was a Member of Curriculum Development Committee for Chinese Language for Higher Education Institutions. She also has been a Member of Selection Committee to appoint teaching faculty in Chinese Language in various Central and State universities. She has been Advisor, Hindi-Chinese Translation Committee of Government of China since 2015.
She served as a member of the Academic Council and Executive Council, University of Delhi. She was also Honorary Director of Gandhi Bhawan, University of Delhi for almost three years till February 2018. She served as Chairperson and member of Governing Body of some colleges of University of Delhi. Presently she is an EC member of Delhi University Women’s Association.
She is a Life Member of Indian History Congress, South and South East Asian Association for the Study of Culture and Religion and India International Centre, New Delhi. She is a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Delhi University Journal of Undergraduate Research and Innovation and International Communication of Chinese Culture.
She has been awarded the Second World Buddhist Outstanding Award, Jointly conferred by National Office of Religion, Royal Thai Government and World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth, 2015 and Journalist Bimalendu Barua Peace Award 2016 by Nirvana Peace Foundation, Chittagong Bangladesh in 2016. She received award for achievements in the field of Peace by International Women Club, Sydney, Australia in March 2017.
