Events > Wednesday Seminars
On 04 June 1989, the prolonged protests and occupation by students and other sections of society of the historic Tiananmen Square was finally ended by armed state action. It generated voluminous writings and discussion all over the world but continues to be a taboo subject of discussion in China. To many, it has shaped the nature of state-society interactions in the Party-state. The leading young scholars specialising on Chinese politics, history, culture and society at the ICS, will reflect on the politics of 'protest' and revisit some of the narratives/discourses on Tiananmen, from both Chinese and global perspectives in the ICS Wednesday Seminar, which marks the 36th anniversary of this momentous day.
