Wednesday Seminar | Exploring Rhetorical Expressions of Political Leaders in Contemporary China | 15 October 2025 @ 3:00 PM IST | Zoom Webinar

15 Oct 2025
Snehal Ajit Ulman
Venue: Zoom Webinar
Time: 3:00 PM

The uniqueness of political culture in contemporary China lies in the use of different rhetorical elements in the expressions by its leaders. Despite the Communist Party of China enjoying complete control over the state apparatus under its proletarian dictatorship, leaders have consistently employed rhetorical expressions in the course of governance. These rhetorical expressions have helped the CPC retain its ‘Mandate of Heaven’ or political legitimacy and power. From Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping, different rhetorical expressions have been used by political leaders effectively to advance their visions and plans. These expressions possess unique linguistic characteristics. On one hand references from Chinese history and classical texts and metaphors are employed, and on the other hand, simple language is used in order to explain abstract ideas. These rhetorics also have certain functions that help in creating a definite level of influence on the target audience. This presentation explores Chinese political rhetoric used by the leaders of contemporary China, highlighting different characteristics it possesses and the functions that it performs.
