Dear Friend,

Even as India and the rest of the world remained engaged in the fight against COVID- 19, we maintained a high level of programme and research activities at the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), while continuing our remote working, to disseminate informed analysis of China and East Asia. We have shifted to digital mode in our outreach and online activities, including organizing our Wednesday Seminars as webinars. Further, we have also increased our presence on various social media platforms, including through a partnership with ThePrint

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

We conducted one Conversation and three Webinars this month.

In partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, we organized the ICS-KAS Conversation on the ‘Future of India-China Economic Relations: Towards Decoupling, Reduced Dependency, or a New Equilibrium?’ on 12 August. The panellists included Dr. Ajit Ranade, Group Executive President and Chief Economist, Aditya Birla Group; Mr. Ravi Bhoothalingam, Treasurer and Honorary Fellow, ICS, Delhi; and Mr. Santosh Pai, Honorary Fellow, ICS, Delhi, and Partner, Link Legal. The discussion was moderated by me (SoundCloud) (YouTube).

Prof. C. Raja Mohan, Director, Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, spoke on ‘China, US, and Changing Asian Geopolitics’ on 5 August  (YouTube).

Dr. Sandip Kumar Mishra, Honorary Fellow, ICS, Delhi, and Associate Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi spoke on ‘South Korea’s Foreign Policy Dilemma in the Indo-Pacific Era’ on 19 August (SoundCloud) (YouTube).

Ms. Sana Hashmi, Taiwan Fellow, Institute of International Relations, National Chengchi University, Taipei, spoke on ‘India-Taiwan Ties: Time for India to Rethink its Taiwan Policy’ on 26 August. Dr. I-Chung Lai, President of Prospect Foundation, Taipei chaired the webinar and delivered substantive remarks  (YouTube).

IN THE MEDIA

Amb. Shyam Saran, Member, Governing Council, ICS, Delhi and former Foreign Secretary, Government of India, wrote a piece for The Indian Express on ‘China’s strategy of economic self-reliance, under label of ‘dual circulation’ has been sharpened by pandemic’ on 31 August. He also appeared on two programmes of The Wire - on ‘National Security Conversations on 16 August and ‘The Interview with Karan Thapar’ on 27 August.

Amb. Kishan S. Rana, Emeritus Fellow, ICS, Delhi, wrote an essay for the Economic and Political Weekly on ‘India’s Envoy to China 1961-63’ on 29 August.

Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Honorary Fellow, ICS, Delhi, and Associate Professor, Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, was quoted on the exclusion of Mandarin from the list of languages under the New Education Policy in The Hindu on 1 August, and in the Bengali daily Anand Bazar Patrika on 2 August.

Dr. Happymon Jacob, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Associate Professor, Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, authored a piece for The Hindu titled ‘A year on, Article 370 and Kashmir mythmaking’ on 4 August.

Dr. Bhim S. Subba, Visiting Research Associate, ICS, Delhi, and Assistance Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Hyderabad, wrote for Moneyconrol.com on The Beidaihe conclave of the Chinese Communist Party’ on 5 August.

Prof. Mahendra P. Lama, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi, and Professor, Centre for South Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, penned two pieces for The Kathmandu Post - ‘Yunnan in a development dilemma’ on 11 August and ‘Chinese foray into the Indian Ocean’ on 26 August.

Dr. Mirza Zulfiqur Rahman, Visiting Research Associate, ICS, Delhi, featured in a podcast by The Bridge Project on ‘Water Management and Diplomacy’ on 16 August.

Dr. Atul Bhardwaj, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi published a piece titled ‘Biden will not bid for war to contain China’ for Observer Research Foundation on 18 August.

Dr. P.K. Anand, Research Associate, ICS, Delhi authored a piece in Malayalam for Asianet News on 19 August on the Chinese Ambassador’s continued forays in the Indian media and how the regional media in India need to expand their capacities to critically engage with the China challenge.

Dr. Jayan Jose Thomas, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, wrote on Labour Market Changes in India, 2005-18’ for the Economic and Political Weekly on 22 August.

Dr. Amita Batra, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Professor, Centre for South Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi wrote a piece on ‘Strengthening India’s trade policy’ for Business Standard on 29 August.

Dr. Rityusha Tiwari, Visiting Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Assistant Editor, China Report, spoke on the topic ‘Difficulties in India-US Trade Deal and impact on India-China Relations’ on Radio Channel News Asia, 938 Live Singapore on 17 August. On NEWS 24 on 19 August, she spoke on the difficulties facing Xi Jinping and opposition within the Chinese Communist Party on 27 August. She was also quoted in two articles in the South China Morning Post – on 8 August in ‘China-India border conflict: communication breakdown looms amid Confucius Institute review and on 22 August on ‘Could Russia side with the US and India against China?’. 

Dr. Happymon Jacob, Adjunct Fellow, ICS and Associate Professor, JNU appeared on two programmes of TheWire - on Contemporary Indian Foreign policymaking on  16 August and  the Colonial origins and the post-colonial evolution of the Sedition law. He also penned two pieces – for The Hindu on A year on, Article 370 and Kashmir mythmaking on 4 August and for the United States Institute of Peace on Toward a Kashmir Endgame? How India and Pakistan Could Negotiate a Lasting Solution on 5 August. 

Faculty updates 

Prof. Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi delivered a lecture titled ‘The Chronicle of a Clash Foretold: Galwan and the Possibilities of a "Reset" in India-China Relations’ organized by the Department of Political Science, Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru on 1 August. She also delivered a keynote lecture at a two-day National Webinar organized by the Department of Political Science, Assam University, Silchar, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Historical Research on the theme of ‘India-China Relations in Post COVID-19 World’ on 6 August. Prof. Acharya was also a panellist in three webinars – ‘China-India Relations: Present and Prospects’, organized by the China Institutes of International Studies, Beijing on 13 August; ‘India-China Relations in Global Perspective: Emerging Relevance of Glossary’, organized by the Department of Political Science, Bharati College, University of Delhi in collaboration with Jamia Millia Islamia on 28 August; and ‘How to Study China’  Workshop organized by Ashoka University, Sonepat, Haryana, for scholars selected under the China-India Visiting Scholars Fellowship on 28 August.

Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, Honorary Fellow, ICS, Delhi presented a paper titled ‘A Brief History of China’ at the Workshop for scholars selected under the China-India Visiting Scholars Fellowship by Ashoka University on 8 August.

Prof. Amita Batra, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Professor, Centre for South Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, published an article titled ‘India’s economic relevance in the Indo-Pacific’ in the journal Asian Perspective (Vol. 44, No.3, 2020).

Dr. G Venkat Raman, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, Delhi, and Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Indore spoke on ‘Isolation or Engagement of China in Post Covid World Order’ at a seminar organised by Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, on 27 August.

Dr. P.K. Anand, Research Associate, ICS, Delhi spoke on ‘Labour Protests and the Chinese Party-State’, at an online Roundtable organized by the Indo Tibet Friendship Society, on 10 August.

Dr. Rityusha Tiwari, Visiting Fellow, ICS, Delhi and Assistant Editor, China Report, presented a paper titled ‘China’s Regional Approach in East and Southeast Asia’ in a webinar organised by Nepal Institute of International Cooperation and Engagement, Kathmandu on 16 August.

Dr. Happymon Jacob, Adjunct Fellow, ICS and Associate Professor, JNU delivered a lecture on Pakistan's India Strategy to the Indian Airforce officers currently enrolled at the College of Air Warfare Studies, Secunderabad on 21 August.
