The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) had an engaging September, continuing our studies and research on China and East Asia on the one hand, and holding various events and activities on the other.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

The 17th Russia-India-China Academic Trilateral Academic Conference was held in Beijing on 10-11 September, hosted by the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Beijing (CICIR). ICS is a founding member of the academic trilateral – one of the important Track-II initiatives of the Institute – along with CICIR and Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Moscow. The Indian delegation comprised myself, Amb. Ajai Malhotra, Distinguished Fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi, Prof. Biswajit Dhar, Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof. Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow, ICS  and Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Dr. Veda Vaidyanathan, Research Associate, ICS.

 

We organized a roundtable on ‘Perspectives on India-China Relations and Trends in the Indo-Pacific’ (YouTube) in collaboration with the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, Shanghai and the India International Centre, New Delhi (IIC) on 20 September.

 

On 25 September, we also organized a day-long International Conference titled ‘China's Digital Silk Road: Implications for India’, at the IIC, in partnership with the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, New Delhi and the IIC.’

 

Three Wednesday Seminars were conducted this month – Dr. Sriparna Pathak, Adjunct Faculty, Jindal School of International Affairs  (Youtube) (Soundcloud); Dr Hemant Adlakha, Honorary Fellow, ICS and Associate Professor, Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (Youtube) (Soundcloud); and Mr. Santosh Pai, Partner, Link Legal and member of the ICS Society  (Youtube) (Soundcloud).

PUBLICATIONS

Commercialisation of Medical Care in China: Changing Landscapes, authored by Prof. Rama V. Baru, Member, Governing Council, ICS and Professor, Centre for Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Dr. Madhurima Nundy, Assistant Director and Associate Fellow, ICS, was published this month by Routledge. The book is an outcome of their work on studying the health service systems in China and corresponding field visits over the last six years. The South Asian edition of the book is being released shortly. An ICS Analysis entitled ‘Emerging Tech Entities and Innovation: Case of Chinese Tech CompaniesDr. Rachit Kumar Murarka, Assistant Professor, Kathmandu School of Law was published this month.

 

We are also glad to inform that according to the SCOPUS Index, which measures the impact factor of academic journals, the ICS quarterly journal, China Report, is now leading the list of journals from India. 

 

IN THE MEDIA

Amb. Shyam Saran, Member, ICS Governing Council featured in an interview regarding the India-US nuclear deal conducted by SNI Wire. Our Research Assistant, Mr. Uday Khanapurkar, wrote a commentary for Global Risk Insights on China’s threat to sanction Indian companies operating on the mainland in the event of a Huawei ban.

Faculty Updates

Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, Vice-Chairperson, ICS presented a paper titled ‘Vocational Education Policies in India and China: Impediments in Implementation’ at an international conference on ‘Perspectives on India-China Developmental Dynamics’ organized by Cheena Bhawan (Department of Chinese) and Viswa-Bharati, Santiniketan on 6-7 September. Dr. Hemant Adlakha, ICS Honorary Fellow, spoke as a member of 5-member Judges Panel at the 3rd Korean Literary Essay Competition on 9 September. Dr. Veda Vaidyanathan, Research Associate, ICS conducted fieldwork in Zambia from 16-29 September. During the fieldwork, she visited Chinese agricultural farms in Chongwe and Chisamba, and interviewed stakeholders in the mining sector in Chingola, Kitwe and Ndola.
