Dear Friend,

In the last month of the year, the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) continued to take up relevant issues and topics through digital platforms to generate informed analysis of China and East Asia. In December, we held a series of activities, including five webinars and nine publications. 

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

The ICS conducted a book launch, a panel discussion and three other webinars this month.

 

A book launch was held on 3 December with six of the contributors discussing their book titled Beyond Pan-Asianism: Connecting China and India, 1840s-1960s, edited by Tansen Sen, Director, Centre for Global Asia, NYU Shanghai and Brian Tsui, Associate Professor, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Apart from the two editors, the speakers included Yin Cao, Associate Professor and Cyrus Tang Scholar in the Department of History, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China; Adhira Mangalagiri, Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature at Queen Mary University of London, UK; Anne Reinhardt, Professor of History, Williams College, Massachusetts and Zhang Ke, Associate Professor in the Department of History, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. A panel discussion on ICS-HYI Fellowship was conducted on 11 December. The panelists included six ICS-HYI Fellows: Dr. Nirmola Sharma, Visiting Research Associate, ICS; Ms. Shagufta Yasmin, Research Scholar, Centre of East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, JNU, New Delhi; Mr. Md. Yasin, Research Scholar, Centre of East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, JNU, New Delhi; Mr. Nishit Kumar, Research Scholar, Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, School of Language Literature and Culture Studies, JNU, New Delhi and Ms. Saloni Sharma, Research Scholar, BITS Pilani, Goa. Shivshankar Menon, Chairman, Advisory Board, ICS, and Former National Security Advisor, Government of India, authored a three-part series titled ‘Their Ties Go Back in Time But India’, ‘China Were Absent From Each Other's Strategic Calculus’, ‘What China Hopes to Gain From the Present Border Standoff With India and India-China Ties: The Future Holds 'Antagonistic Cooperation', Not War for The Wire on 2, 3 and 7 December respectively. Ambassador Menon’s interview on Will Face Off with China Impact India's Economic Growth? was carried by India Ahead News channel on 24 December 2020. Prof. Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow, ICS, and Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, JNU, New Delhi was quoted by Aljazeera in the article titled ‘India-China relations at ‘most difficult phase in 30-40 years’ published on 10 December 2020, Vietnamese magazine Soha in the article titled ‘Sino-Indian relations at the most difficult moment: Nepal becomes the new power "arena" of the two big nations on 14 December 2020 and Zeit Online in the article titled ‘Troubled enough’ (Genug gepiesackt) on 25 December 2020. Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Honorary Fellow, ICS and Associate Professor, JNU, New Delhi, authored a piece for The Diplomat, on  With RCEP Complete, China Eyes CPTPP on 1 December 2020. Dr. P.K. Anand, Visiting Research Associate, ICS, Delhi, wrote a piece for The Hindu on The Tightrope between Production, Industrial Peace on 24 December 2020. His comments were carried by Reuters in their article titled Violence at Apple supplier in India fuels fears of further worker unrest on 15 December 2020, and News9 on Uyghur Crisis: Apple’s Chinese Supplier Accused Of Forced Labour on 30 December 2020. Dr. Mirza Zulfiqur Rahman, Visiting Research Associate, ICS, Delhi was quoted in The Scroll article titled India wants to counter China’s mega dam plans by building its own. It is a bad idea on 11 December 2020.

 

FACULTY UPDATES

 

Amb. Shivshankar Menon, Chairman, Advisory Board, ICS, and Former National Security Advisor, Government of India, participated in a Webinar titled, ‘A New Order for the U.S. and Asia — Asia Beyond America? organised by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace on 10 Dec 2020. Amb. Gautam Bambawale, Adjunct Fellow, ICS participated in a discussion on ‘Does India Need a Course-Correction in South Asia? organised by Council for Strategic and Defence Research and The Wire on 20 December 2020. Mr. Santosh Pai, Honorary Fellow, ICS, and Partner, Link Legal India Law Services, participated in a panel discussion organised by Mint on ‘Mint Budget 2021 Live Panel: Atmanirbhar Bharat - throwback or industrial leap? on 14 December 2020. Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, and Executive Director, Institute of Global Studies, Centre for South Asian Studies and Associate Professor, College of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University, Shanghai appeared in an interview for Observatory on Contemporary Crises, St Louis University, Madrid on The Future of India-China Relations was published on 1 December 2020. He presented a paper on ‘China in South Asia: Changing Regional Dynamics and Order’ at the International webinar on "South Asia in Transition: Perspective on Geopolitics and Regional Cooperation, organised by University College of Women, Osmania University, Hyderabad on 2 and 3 December 2020. He also presented a paper titled ‘In the name of the People: 19th Party Congress and Leadership Transition’ at a Webinar on “Understanding China from a Multidisciplinary Prospective" organised by Cheena Bhavana, Visva Bharati on 9 & 10 December 2020. His comments on India-China Relations were carried by Anadolu Agency, Turkey on 18 December 2020. Dr. Zorawar Daulet Singh, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, authored a  book titled  ‘Powershift: India–China Relations in a Multipolar World which was published by Macmillan on 7 December 2020. Dr. Ritu Agarwal, Associate Professor at Centre for East Asian Studies, JNU, New Delhi gave a talk on Corona virus Pandemic and Women's lives in Wuhan organised by Gender Impact Studies Centre, Impact and Policy Research India, Delhi Post News and GenDev Centre for Research and Innovation on 17 December 2020. She also published an article titled ‘COVID-19 and Blurred Boundaries of Women's work in Wuhan in Delhi Post News on 30 December 2020. Dr. Usha Chandran, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, and Assistant Professor, Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies, JNU, New Delhi, presented a paper titled ‘Multidisciplinary Approaches to Explore Gender Issues in China’ at the webinar on ‘Understanding China from a Multidisciplinary Perspective’, organised by Department of Chinese Language & Culture, Cheena Bhavana, Visva-Bharati held on 9 and 10 December 2020. Dr. G Venkat Raman, Adjunct Fellow, ICS, participated in a panel discussion titled Masterclass: The World in 2021 organised by Founding Fuel on 12 December 2020. The event also figured amongst the best stories of Founding Fuel for 2020. Mr. Md Yasin, ICS-HYI Fellow 2018, translated an article titled The “Worshipping America”, “Kowtowing to America” Disease of Spinelessness has to be Cured! for the "India in the Chinese Media" project of the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore, which was published on 16 December 2020.  I spoke at events organised by the Centre for Air Power Studies and Vivekananda International Foundation.
