The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) continued its wide range of events, activities, and research on China and East Asia in the month of February.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

A Special Lecture by Prof. Stephanie Balme, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Sciences Po, Paris was held on 21 February, 2020 on ‘China’s current science, technology and innovation: opportunities and challenges(YouTube).

Three Wednesday seminars were conducted this month – Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Honorary Fellow, ICS, and Associate Professor, Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi spoke on 'CAA: Analyzing Media Reports, Commentaries in China’ (YouTube) (Soundcloud); Dr. Pradeep Taneja, Deputy Head of School, School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Melbourne, Australia  on ‘Sino- Indian Competition in the Indian Ocean: The Scope for small state Agency’ (YouTube) (Soundcloud); and Mr.Oliver Nelson Gonsalves, Associate Fellow, National Maritime Foundation, New Delhi, on ‘Side stepping the Malacca Strait Dilemma: Exploring the Canadian Alternative to Mitigate China’s Oil Insecurity’ (YouTube).  

PUBLICATIONS

This month we had seven publications in total – three ICS Analysis and four ICS Occasional Papers. Three out of the four Occasional Papers were presented during the 3rd India Forum on China @Goa in December 2019 - Amb. Vijay Nambiar, former Indian Ambassador to China, and Chef de Cabinet to United Nations Secretary General on  The Belt and Road Initiative Post-April 2019: Plus ça Change! ; Prof. Heribert Dieter, Visiting Professor, University of Hong Kong on A European perspective on conflict between China and the West and Prof. Frank N Pieke, Director and CEO, Mercator Institute for China Studies, Berlin, on China through European Eyes. There was also an Occasional Paper by Mrs. Sharmila Kantha, Principal Consultant, Confederation of Indian Industry, on Changing Patterns in India-China Trade Relationsbased on her presentation at conference on ‘India-China Dynamics: Reappraising the significance for Europe’ organised by Mercator Institute of Chinese Studies, Berlin. 

Dr. Anurag Viswanath, Adjunct Fellow, ICS contributed an ICS Analysis on Xi Jinping’s New Era’-Continuities and Change; Dr.Nirmola Sharma, Visiting Research Associate, ICS penned an Analysis titled When Bhutan got caught up in the Tug-of-War between Colonial Britain and China; and Dr. Medha Bisht, Senior Assistant Professor, South Asian University, New Delhi wrote an ICS Analysis on Brahmaputra and its Imageries: Strategising Sustainable Development.

We also had a Blog Piece in the ICS Research Blog – Mr. Mahesh Kumar Kamtam, Research Intern, ICS, on Natuna Crisis: Is South China Sea a Fisheries Dispute?.  

IN THE MEDIA

Prof. Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow, ICS, and Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, gave an interview on BBC on the Impact of Coronavirus on the Indian Economy on 7 February 2020. Prof. Acharya also reviewed the book ‘Running with the Dragon: How India Should do Business with China’ by Saibal Dasgupta for OutlookIndia.com. Mr. M.V. Rappai, Honorary Fellow, ICS wrote a piece for Diplomatist.com titled ‘Taiwan Elections’. Dr. P. K. Anand, Research Associate, ICS authored a piece for Moneycontrol.com titled ‘Coronavirus exposes the brittleness of China’s economic prowess’. Dr. Anurag Viswanath, Adjunct Fellow, ICS authored four pieces for Financialexpress.com - ‘Behind Myanmar-China pauk phaw Relationson 1 February 2020; ‘Tough Times for China Model: Chinese Year of the Rat begins with Metaphorical ‘Plagueon 8 February 2020; Huawei Conundrum: Global Collaboration’ Continues to Elude Chinese Giant; India Testing Waters’ on 17 February 2020 and Wuhan Impact on China: With a Formidable GDP of $14.37 Trillion, the Country will Recover and Bounce Back in Business on 22 February 2020. 

Faculty Updates

Amb. Kishan Rana, Emeritus Fellow, ICS, published his research titled ‘Asian Diplomacy: Harmony and Contrast’ in EDA Insight. Prof.  Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow, ICS, and Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi delivered a lecture on ‘The Rise of China and the IR Discourse’ at the Department of International Relations, Ashoka University, Sonepat, Haryana on 13 February 2020.  Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, Vice Chairperson, and Honorary Fellow, ICS, published an article titled ‘BRICS: A Decade Long Endeavour’ in China-India Dialogue (Volume 18, No. 6). Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti joined Jamia Milia Islamia as Visiting Professor from 1 February 2020. Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Honorary Fellow, ICS and Associate Professor, Centre for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, spoke on ‘Chinese Life and Culture through the Poetic Lens’ at IIC Poetry Society India book launch and Panel discussion on the English and Hindi translations of renowned Chinese Poet Tian He. Dr. Adlakha also discussed the Chinese Film 'Dying to Survive' following its film screening at Maulana Mohamed Ali ‘Jauhar’ Academy of International Studies, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi. He was also part of a panel discussion on Dr. Manoj Joshi's paper on ‘Invest, Acquire, Dominate: Rise and Rise of China Tech’ at Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi on 20 February 2020. Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Adjunct Fellow, ICS delivered a special lecture on ‘40 Years of Economic Reforms in China’ at Chaudhari Charan Singh University, Meerut on 19 February 2020. Dr. Mirza Zulfiqur Rahman, Visiting Research Assistant, ICS co-authored an article titled Informal Markets and Fuzzy Flows in Fragile Border Zones’ in the Antiatlas Journal. My outreach activities included engagements at NSCS and VIF.
